I’ve been meaning to write this one for a while. Every time I post a review, someone asks about plastic units, usually because they’re half the price of steel. So here’s the deal: I bought a couple of the popular plastic resin units, put them through the same contractor test I use on steel, and I’m here to tell you where they work and where they’ll waste your money.

The short version: Plastic shelving is fine for light, dry storage. Steel is the only answer for anything that weighs more than a bag of mulch. But the gap between them is narrower than it used to be, and there’s one plastic unit I’d actually consider for a garage.

Plastic vs Steel: The Verdict

Steel wins, and it’s not close. If you’re storing anything heavier than a box of Christmas ornaments, buy steel. The plastic units I tested flexed under load, the shelves bowed after a few months, and one of them cracked at a joint when I moved it loaded. That said, plastic has one job it does better than steel: staying rust-free in a damp garage. If you live somewhere humid and you’re only storing light stuff, plastic won’t betray you the way a cheap wire rack will. But for real storage, steel is the only thing I trust.

Compared to: The Real-World Difference

Let’s get specific. The Husky 5-tier at $189 is my benchmark for steel. It’s got a welded frame, 350 lbs per shelf, and it doesn’t wobble. I’ve installed a bunch of these in client garages, and they hold up. The EKJ 5-tier at $145 is close, but the frame is bolted, not welded, and the per-shelf rating drops to around 500 lbs total across five shelves. Fine for most garages, but it’s not a tank.

The plastic unit I tested was a generic resin 5-tier at $60. It’s marketed as holding 250 lbs per shelf, which is a joke. I loaded one shelf with two 40 lb bags of sand, and it sagged visibly within a week. The shelves are hollow plastic with a honeycomb core. They’re fine for paper towels and empty bins, but that’s about it.

The Sakugi 5-tier at $110 is the interesting middle ground. It’s steel, it’s got leveling feet, and it’s stable. It’s newer to the market, so I haven’t had it for five years yet, but the construction is solid. If you’re on a budget and you want steel, this is the one I’d point you to.

Design and Construction

The steel units win on structure. The Husky has a welded frame that doesn’t flex when you bump it. The EKJ is bolted, which means you need to check the bolts after a year. I’ve seen bolted frames loosen up in garages with temperature swings. It’s a five-minute fix with a wrench, but it’s a thing you have to do.

The plastic unit is a different animal. The shelves snap into the uprights, and there’s no real locking mechanism. It’s friction that holds it together. That’s fine until you put weight on it and the joints start to separate. I had a shelf pop loose on mine when I loaded it with paint cans. Not ideal.

The Sakugi has leveling feet, which I care about more than most people. My garage floor has a slope, and a unit that rocks on uneven concrete is useless. The Sakugi’s feet adjust, and it sits stable. The Husky has them too, but the EKJ and Amazon Basics don’t. You’ll need shims for those.

Performance Under Load

Here’s where the numbers matter. The Husky is rated at 350 lbs per shelf. I loaded it with 400 lbs of mixed junk, left it for a year, and it didn’t sag. That’s the contractor test. The EKJ claims 500 lbs total across five shelves, so about 100 lbs per shelf. I loaded it with 150 lbs per shelf, and it held, but the frame flexed a little. Not dangerous, but noticeable.

The plastic unit is rated at 250 lbs per shelf, which is a lie. I put 75 lbs on one shelf, and it bowed. By month three, the bow was permanent. The shelf didn’t crack, but it sagged enough that stuff rolled off. That’s the shelf sag failure mode I talk about. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when.

The Amazon Basics unit is a different story. It’s particleboard shelves on a steel frame, and it’s rated at 350 lbs per shelf. That’s optimistic. Buyers report the middle shelf bowing at around 150 lbs. I wouldn’t put more than 100 lbs on it, and I’d anchor it to the wall. The particleboard is the weak link. If your garage gets damp, that board swells and crumbles. I’ve seen it happen a dozen times.

Durability and Rust

The plastic unit wins on rust, full stop. It’s been in my garage for six months, and there’s zero corrosion. The steel units have epoxy coating, which helps, but it’s not perfect. The Husky has held up fine, but I’ve seen cheaper steel units start to rust within a year in humid climates. If you live somewhere damp, check the coating before you buy.

The plastic unit cracks in the cold, though. I had a joint snap when I moved it in January. The garage was around 30 degrees, and the plastic was brittle. It’s a tradeoff. No rust, but it breaks when it’s cold.

Assembly

The Amazon Basics unit is the easiest to assemble. It took me about 30 minutes, and the instructions were clear. The Husky took about 45 minutes. The EKJ took over an hour, and the instructions were a photocopy of a photocopy. I stripped one bolt, and I had to go to the hardware store for a replacement. That’s annoying.

The plastic unit was actually the easiest. It snapped together in about 20 minutes, no tools required. But that’s because it’s held together by friction, which is also why it flexes. You get what you pay for.

Should You Buy It?

If you’re storing anything heavier than a box of books, buy steel. The Husky is the best I’ve tested, and it’s worth the $189. If you’re on a budget, the Sakugi at $110 is a solid pick for light to moderate garage storage. Skip the plastic units unless you’re only storing light stuff in a dry, climate-controlled space. And if you live somewhere humid, skip the Amazon Basics. The particleboard will die.

Plastic is fine for a closet or a basement. It’s not fine for a garage that sees temperature swings and humidity. Steel is the answer. It’s heavier, it costs more, and it can rust, but it holds up. That’s the bottom line.

What I’m Testing Next

I’ve got a couple of the newer epoxy-coated steel units coming in, and I’m going to see if they hold up better in humid conditions than the older ones. I’m also keeping an eye on the Sakugi brand. They’re new, but their leveling feet are better than anything else in the price range. I’ll update this when I have more data.
